How to learn

Judgment is the scarce skill.

In a world of free answers, learning is deciding what is worth knowing, and proving to yourself that you know it when the tool is closed.

Where

Do not start with another feed.

A course, a book, a person who will ask you to rebuild the argument. Those still work. A chat window is a tutor only if you close it and write. Barbara Oakley failed mathematics in school, then took a doctorate in engineering. The useful part is not the ending. It is that she treated difficulty as a method problem, not a character problem.

Start here, in this order, if you want the sources this site stands on.

  1. Coursera, Learning How to Learn, Oakley and Sejnowski. The lectures are short. Do the retrieval, not just the videos.
  2. Oakley, A Mind for Numbers. Same ideas, on paper, so you can close it.
  3. Hutchinson, Concept Development Studies in Chemistry, Rice University. Free. The subject is chemistry. The order is the point, and it transfers.

Oakley, in practice

Two modes

Focused mode works a problem you already have a frame for. Diffuse mode links things you did not mean to link. You cannot be in both at once. Twenty-five minutes, then a walk, a bus, a shower. The arrival in the shower is not magic. Diffuse mode had something to work on, because focused mode left clay.

Chunking

A chunk is a concept pressed into one slot of working memory, so the slot is free for the next step. Focus, understand, then know the context where it applies. A formula memorised without the context falls apart when the question is asked a different way. That is the exam you thought you had prepared for.

Illusion of competence

Highlighting and rereading feel like study. They are recognition. Close the book. Write what you remember. The blank line is the lesson. Sleep, then retrieve again. Spacing beats a single long sitting.

The rule for a model

Use it to accelerate, never to replace. Ask it for a question, not an essay. Then answer with the tool closed. If you cannot explain the thing without it, you borrowed the explanation. Return it.

Hutchinson's order

Redirect the focus of learning.

His phrase. Students were being handed the model and asked to believe it. He reversed the room. Foundation, then a question the foundation forces, then an observation, then a deduction, then a model that is allowed to be wrong.

Models are not proved. They are retired when an observation will not fit. If you can only recite the model, you took the conclusion. You did not earn it. That is the fifth spell.
